City staff and elected leaders justified their efforts saying, “We must diversify our neighborhoods and create opportunities for a quality lifestyle throughout the community for our low-income families.”
Suburban residents came out in force against these proposed relocations with the typical “not-in-my-backyard” arguments. At the very same time, new low to middle income focused multifamily development projects were being proposed in various parts of the city. These unfunded mandates from our cities are well intentioned, but often result in preventing any new development rather than encouraging the creation of new affordable units.
We need to discover ways to work together as an industry with government agencies to effectively create an opportunity for diversity. We need a simple program that can provide the capital necessary to include an affordable element in each and every one of our new multi-family communities. This would eliminate the need for ineffective inclusionary zoning regulations. It would also provide an opportunity for families to have a better place to live, in better-quality homes and school systems. It would provide an opportunity for true diversity and the strengthening of our neighborhoods.
